Chapter 7: I'll Get It Done the Night Before It's Due!
Chapter 7 deals with the procrastinator that manages to make themselves look busy, but isn't really accomplishing much. The authors of the book stress the importance of monitoring student progress throughout the research process. We need to encourage students to use their time effectively. Some strategies that they suggest are:
Create a 1 resource at a time rule. This prevents those students that go into the library and print and pull numerous resources to look busy, but never really open one of them.
Teach students how to find and use one new resource a day and then give them the opportunity to use the new skill.
Schedule the right amount of time in the library and make sure that each visit has a purpose. This will prevent students from socializing.
Use exit slips at the end of each library period. An example slip that they provided in the book had 3 questions that each student had to answer. The questions included: 1. What did you accomplish today? 2. What will you do next? And 3. Any questions or concerns. The teacher then reviews the slips nightly and flags students that he/she must make a point of working with or checking on the next day.
Use thinking logs.
